State Representative John M. Cabello, R-Machesney Park, issued the following statement following the passage of legislation placing a constitutional amendment referendum to enact a graduated tax on the November 2020 General Election ballot today:
“Illinois has a spending problem, not a revenue problem. The same Springfield politicians responsible for years of overspending, over taxing and a mountain of debt want a graduated tax for one reason and one reason only, to raise taxes and spend more of your money. This job-killing tax plan would drive more families and jobs out of Illinois. I stand with Stateline area taxpayers against it.”
The legislation is Senate Joint Resolution Constitutional Amendment #1. It was previously approved by the State Senate on May 1 along party lines in a vote of 40-19.
