Rep. Cabello: Graduated Income Tax Wrong for Illinois

State Representative John M. Cabello, R-Machesney Park, has signed on to co-sponsor House Resolution 153 today, legislation stating opposition to any measure that would allow for the creation of a graduated income tax on Illinois residents. Representative Cabello issued the following statement after the Capitol press conference introducing the resolution:

“The same Springfield politicians responsible for years of overspending, over taxing and a mountain of debt want to move to a graduated tax for one reason and one reason only, to raise taxes and spend more of your money. What’s worse, they won’t even tell the public what the rates would be. Last year, a House Democrat introduced a bill which sought to impose a graduated income tax. Under his plan, the Commission on Government Forecasting and Accountability reported that 77% of Illinois taxpayers would see an increase in their income tax, amounting to a total of over $5.2 Billion in new taxes. This job-killing tax plan would drive more families and jobs out of Illinois. I am going to fight for Stateline area taxpayers against it.”

All 44 members of the Illinois House Republican Caucus are co-sponsors of HR 153.

Representative Cabello serves the 68th District, which includes portions of Rockford, Loves Park, Machesney Park and Cherry Valley.
