State Representative John Cabello, R-Machesney Park, has been re-appointed Republican Spokesperson on the Public Safety-Appropriations Committee for the 2019-2021 legislative term, a role that positions him to play a leading role in funding for 23 separate state agencies including the Department of Corrections, Department of Transportation and the Illinois State Police.
The Spokesperson is responsible for leading the efforts of the minority caucus within each committee; including questioning witnesses who provide testimony at committee hearings, being the lead advocate for caucus positions on legislation assigned to that committee, and negotiating with the Committee Chairperson to reach bipartisan consensus on as many bills as possible.
“I will work aggressively to restore accountability at the Illinois Tollway and ensure that our public safety professionals in every agency have the resources they need,” Cabello said. “This can and should be done on a bipartisan basis. I’m ready to get to work starting today to begin addressing Illinois’ many public safety priorities.”
In addition to the Spokesperson assignment, Representative Cabello has also been appointed to serve on the committees on Labor & Commerce, Judiciary – Criminal, Transportation: Regulation, Roads & Bridges, and the Appropriations-Capital Committee.
The Appropriations-Capital Committee is tasked with devising a bipartisan plan to invest in Illinois’ transportation infrastructure this year, projects including state highways, bridges, air and rail assets.
The Labor & Commerce Committee deals with legislation concerning economic growth and labor regulations, including issues such as the minimum wage.CC The Judiciary – Criminal Committee handles all legislation concerning criminal laws including areas such as mandatory minimum sentencing, penalty enhancements, criminal justice reform, and regulation of sex offenders.
The Transportation: Regulation, Roads & Bridges Committee coordinates legislation related to the safety of Illinois’ vast network of state highways and bridges.
Committee assignments for the 101st General Assembly were announced today as the Illinois House of Representatives prepares to reconvene on Tuesday, February 5.
