Sgt. Blake Evans (1983-2008) LOVES PARK –State Representative John Cabello, R-Machesney Park, announced today that the unveiling of signage designating the portion of Illinois Route 251 as it travels between Spring Creek Road and Bauer Parkway as the Sergeant Blake W. Evans Memorial Highway will take place at 11:00 a.m. on Monday, June 4 at Illinois Route 251 just south of the Harlem Road/Bauer Parkway intersection in Machesney Park. Members of the media and the general public are welcome and encouraged to attend the sign unveiling ceremony, where attendees will gather in a nearby parking lot adjacent to Gill’s Diner.
Representative Cabello introduced and sponsored legislation last year, House Joint Resolution 64, to designate the portion of Illinois Route 251 in honor of Sergeant Evans’ life and service. The resolution was unanimously adopted by the Illinois House of Representatives in June 2017 and by the State Senate last October.
“Sergeant Blake Evans is an American hero whose memory lives on to this day,” Representative Cabello said. “I will be honored to stand with his family at the signage unveiling as we dedicate this portion of highway in Sergeant Evans’ name for our community to celebrate his life and remember his service for all time.”
U.S. Army Sergeant Blake W. Evans of Rockford, age 24, was killed in the line of duty on May 25, 2008 during Operation Iraqi Freedom. Sergeant Evans was assigned to the 2nd Battalion, 327th Infantry Regiment, 1st Brigade Combat Team, 101st Airborne Division (Air Assault) at Fort Campbell, Kentucky. He died in Balad, Iraq, of wounds sustained when his vehicle encountered an improvised explosive device in the Al Jazeera Desert.
Sergeant Evans is survived by his wife, Shannon, and their two children. Sergeant Evans’ mother, Judy DiGiovanni, is an employee with the Rockford Police Department.
